This year Sankranti is celebrated from Saturday, 14th January 2024 to Tuesday, 17th January 2024
In Telangana, the festival is celebrated over four days:
• Day 1 – Bhoghi
• Day 2 – Makar Sankranti, the main festival day January 15th, 2024
• Day 3 – Kanuma
• Day 4 — Mukkanuma
Bhoghi - On this day people discard/repurpose old, broken, and unused items and replacing them or making them into new items.
Makar Sankranti - Makar Sankranti marks the start of longer days. It is also known by various names such as Lohri, and Pongal. People wear new clothes, pray to God, fly kites, and make offerings of traditional food to loved ones who've past on. They also make beautiful Rangoli patterns on the ground with rice flour in front of their homes.
Kanuma - Cattle are the symbolic indication of prosperity and on this day they are showcased with honor.
Mukkanuma - People in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana do not eat any meat (or fish) during the first three days of the festival and do so only on this day.
It is good to follow your families particular customs but traditionally ours prepares Snacks on the first and 3rd days, Pongal and Sweets on the 2nd, and Non-Veg dishes on the last day.
Here is a recipe list with a Non-Veg section at the end if you are interested.
