Food 'n Film "Return to Oz" - Ham & Biscuit Sandwich w/ Spicy Mustard
There are certain movies
that have become tradition to watch over the holidays when we are together as a
family. They tend to be somewhat obscure, found treasures of the discount VHS
bin… and when we discuss them in public people often give a quizzical look and ask
if we made them up. Such is the reaction we are usually met with when we
mention watching “Return to Oz”. Now, I’m sure most of you have seen the 1939
Technicolor marvel that is “The Wizard of Oz” but the story didn’t stop there,
what most people don’t know is that there was a series of 14 Oz stories.
“Return to Oz” combines The Marvelous Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz
with a slightly darker, deeper storyline that captures the imagination and
adheres to the original
writings quite well. In this movie Dorothy returns to the Land of Oz and discovers
that the entire country and its inhabitants are in fatal trouble. She,
alongside her New
Friends such as Billina the Chicken, Tik-Tok the Copper Mechanical Man, Jack
Pumpkinhead, and The Gump; must save Oz by defeating the new villains who are much
scarier than the Wicked Witches…The Wheelers, Head Stealing Princess Mombi, and
The Gnome King and his Ghouls.

Try not to see faces everywhere after this, I dare you! |
In my opinion it was the
villains that really made this movie great, I first watched it over 20 years ago
and the images of Headless Princess Mombi chasing Dorothy or the Gnome King and
his creepy Claymation spies are as vivid in my mind as the first time I watched
it!

Jean Marsh as the original Mombi Head |
Princess Mombi was particularly creepy when she told Dorothy she’d keep her
a little longer so she could have her head for her collection! These detailed
memories are definitely a credit to Jean Marsh’s acting ability. She left
an unbelievable impression on my childhood in this movie, but also as Evil
Queen Bavmorda in Willow (1988), and of course as the Bertha Mason to George C.
Scott’s Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre (1970).
One of my favorite culinary scenes is right after
Dorothy and Billina arrive in Oz they come across the lunch-pail trees. When
she picks one of the ripe pails, she opens it to see what's inside which is a
ham and biscuit sandwich wrapped in white paper, a piece of cake, a pickle, a
slice of cheese, and an apple. Billina then says that she's "Glad it
wasn't fried chicken". I thought that was such an awesome idea, and this
recipe is based on that scene.
Here leftover ham is cooked in a little pickle
juice for a sweet zing, coated in whole grain mustard, and then placed in a
flaky homemade biscuit for a great on the go breakfast or lunch meal.
Here's my recipe for Ham & Biscuits:
Makes 6 Sandwiches
Ingredients:
12 Pieces Sliced Cooked Country Ham
*You can use your own recipe or the ready made biscuits just make sure they are about 3" wide after baking
Prep Work: Preheat the oven, while making the Biscuits.
Directions:
1. Make the biscuits and after they are cooked, while they are still warm use a fork to separate them.
2. Heat a skillet to medium hot with a little bit of olive oil and add the sliced ham. Once browned on each side add some pickle juice and let it caramelize.
3. Place cooked sliced ham on opened biscuits, and spread mustard on top before putting the top on.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
