Hispanic Heritage Month Recipes

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Each year, from September 15 to October 15 Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. 2021 was especially significant because it was the 200th anniversary of Costa Rican Independence from Spain. Here are a few traditional & unique Latin American recipes you may want to add to your menu:

In My Kitchen - December 2015

It's time for another round of the very cool monthly happening called "In My Kitchen" run by Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

So here we go....

This Month in my Kitchen...

November was also a bit busy in the best sense. Holidays, Anniversaries, and  Family Get-Togethers abounded! Weather wise, it's mostly cooled off but our strawberry plants are still flowering as if to bite their proverbial thumb at the coming winter.

We celebrated our "Diwaliversary", our Wedding Anniversary fell on the Hindu holiday of Diwali this year. Kishore sent me this beautiful bouquet of flowers to my workplace, much to my surprise.

For Diwali, we went over to dinner and celebrated with friends. Diwali also known as Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of Lights.

Late Fall- Early Winter is prime time to get persimmons here and we haven't been disappointed. They have been crunchy and extra sweet. Perfect with lunch, after dinner, or as a midnight snack! :)

Kishore's parents sent us some awesome goodies including raw cashews, Amma's Pickles, and some tasty savory snacks. Needless to say breakfast the following Saturday was Rice Idli with Amma's Ginger Pickle and Sambar.

Our lab welcomed a new member from China this past month, and he was so thoughtful in bringing a gift, this lovely tea. Just in time for cooler weather, it smells and tastes great. I have been enjoying it these cold mornings before work.

As is tradition, the family went to my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving, and the meal started with her fabulous Squash soup.

I contributed to the family Thanksgiving meal with Homemade Orange Cranberry Sauce, made with fresh NJ Cranberries.

A friend picked up some Smoked Salmon Pate for me, knowing my love of Smoked Salmon. Haven't tried it yet but I'm eager too.

I made some Costa Rican Coffee Bean and Raw Cocoa Nib Brittle. It was really tasty and a little went a long way energy wise!

I'd also like to remind everyone of the monthly linkup called "Food 'n Film"! December's linkup is posted and open from the 4th to the 30th. Hope you join up! :)

Please make sure you stop in and take a glance at everyone else's kitchens!

So tell me...What's happening in your kitchen this month?

  1. What a fun looking month. Beautiful bouquet, belated happy anniversary. Your tea looks lovely, perfect for these cooler days. Your brittle sounds quite delicious.

  2. What a busy time Emily. The brittle looks fab but I know I would just gobble it all down despite being full of coffee beans and sugar so just as well it was all the way over there! I've never had an idli (or an appam) so they are high on my list. Maybe a trip to Kerala will sort that out. Fingers crossed. All the best for the holdays. xxx

    1. Hi Fiona! I had to parcel them out otherwise I wold have eaten it all! As for the idle and appam they are pretty bland, they serve as the perfect conduit to soak up and ferry delicious pickles and sambar into your mouth. Good luck with Kerala! :)

  3. Belated Happy Anniversary to you both. Such a colourful post. The raw cacoa nib brittle looks good and ah you have cranberries. I hope to pick some her fresh from the supermarket for seasonal dishes.

  4. Belated Diwaliversary wishes - lovely shot of the lighted display. The persimmons are beautiful but it's the coffee/cocoa nib brittle that looks a real treat.
