Hispanic Heritage Month Recipes

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Each year, from September 15 to October 15 Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. 2021 was especially significant because it was the 200th anniversary of Costa Rican Independence from Spain. Here are a few traditional & unique Latin American recipes you may want to add to your menu:

In My Kitchen - September 2014

It's time for another round of the very cool monthly happening called "In My Kitchen" run by Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

So here we go....

This Month in my Kitchen...

August was a busy month; with family gatherings,  travel, and lots of preserving.

This Past Week's Harvest included Okra, Ichiban Eggplant,  White Eggplant, Green Chilies, Tomatoes (Beefsteak, Cherry, Cherokee Purple, and Black Krim), Zucchini, and Crookneck Squash.

I've been Drying, Canning and Preserving our garden produce as it comes in.
Dahi Mirchi, Yogurt Chilies

L to R: Pineapple Curd, Rhubarb Jelly, Fig and Drambuie Jam

L to R: Pickled Jalapeños, Pickled Beets, Dill Pickled Golden Beets, Tomato Sauce w/Basil

For My Birthday Last Weekend, Kishore and I went on a road trip to Canada. We visited Montreal, Quebec City, and Wendake. We visited the Wendat - Huron Traditional Site and had a delicious traditional Huron meal. I picked up this cookbook, I hope to share it's recipes soon.

We also visited a Winery in the Eastern Townships, and of course stocked up on sweet Ice Wine.

My sister gave me these lovely Copper Mugs as a gift, I think it's a hint she wants more of my Homemade Ginger Beer!

She also brought this lovely German Riesling. I loved the Monkey bottle, it's a keeper!

My Cousin got married, so for their Garden Reception I made Vanilla Cupcakes with a Pineapple Curd filling, topped with Coconut Rum Buttercream frosting and a Dried Pineapple Flower.

A new ancient grain added to the pantry, recipes to follow.

I made some new crocheted kitchen scrubbies with leftover Cotton Thread.

Recently found some of my Grandparents' Cookbooks, and thought about doing a monthly post from them. I think I'll start with this one.
First Ladies Cookbook 1969 - From Washington to Nixon

Please make sure you stop in and take a glance at everyone else's kitchens!

So tell me...What's happening in your kitchen this month?

  2. What a fabulous IMK instalment. You have so many wonderful things in your kitchen. I love the sound of pineapple curd. The amaranth looks very interesting and your crochet scrubbies are fabulous. I am busy with a blanket for a cousin who's having her second baby. I too have recently done a few (still more to come) reviews on old family cook books.
    Have a wonderful day.
