Hispanic Heritage Month Recipes

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! Each year, from September 15 to October 15 Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by sharing the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. 2021 was especially significant because it was the 200th anniversary of Costa Rican Independence from Spain. Here are a few traditional & unique Latin American recipes you may want to add to your menu:

In My Kitchen - August 2014

It's time for another round of the very cool monthly happening called "In My Kitchen" run by Celia at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

So here we go....

This Month in my Kitchen...

Our Kitchen garden is in full production! We've been collecting veggies, and fruits galore! It's become a race to use them, preserve and share the goods.

This Sunday's Harvest included Okra, Baby Eggplant, Chilies, Tomatoes, Zucchini, and Crookneck Squash.

And Green Beans that are loving this weather, and are growing over the fence and into our neighbors' yard.

Stuffed Squash Blossoms as part of a lovely afternoon Antipasto Platter with friends.

So excited that we have grapes this year!

One week's worth of Chilies on this plate...Some will be used as is, some are being dried, and some will become Dahi Mirchi (Yogurt Chilies)!

Used some of those dried chilies to make Spicy Honey Cashews. It was a hit, seeing as this is all I was left with after Kishore and my Sis attacked them!

An early August birthday gift from Hubby!

Which I've been using lately to preserve our Roma Tomatoes.

Fresh Blackberry Coconut Scones as a sweet treat.

And finally the Mesquite I order came in so I'll be able to try Gerard's Mesquite flour sourdough bread w/figs and pecans over at Bread and Tortillas. I can't wait!

Please make sure you stop in and take a glance at everyone else's kitchens!

So tell me...What's happening in your kitchen this month?

  1. Yoghurt Chilli- Dahi Murchi- I was only reading about these last night. I am intrigued to know how you do these. Your crops look healthy and abundant. And stuffed squash flowers- a picture of summer.

  2. Wow, look at all your produce! How fabulous! And I'm intrigued by the mesquite powder - the only time I've heard of mesquite was as a bbq wood? Surely that's not a bag of sawdust? :)

    1. Hi Celia! Mesquite wood is used in BBQ's, mesquite flour/powder is made from the ground pods(beans) of the tree. The flour has this combination chocolate and roasted nut flavor. Can't wait to use it! Thanks for stopping by and thanks again for hosting! :)

  8. Sorry for the delay in coming over, been a bit distracted the past week. The colour of your grapes are fantastic. I look forward to your Cashew recipe, my mouth is watering just looking at them. Never seen a jerk/food dehydrator like yours before, I have one, but it looks completely different which makes it interesting for me.
